About the Department/College

The Northern Arizona University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 15 men's and women's NCAA Division-I programs with more than 350 student-athlete participants. The university is a member of the Big Sky Conference for all sports with the exception of women's swimming and diving, which competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).


About the Position

Northern Arizona Athletics Department is now hiring one (1) Athletics Academic Coordinator, Intermediate. The Coordinator helps provide services and support to assist student athletes in their development as a University student through the integration of academic learning and personal improvement/individual growth and to ensure meaningful and purposeful experiences and interactions that foster a successful path towards
graduation.

Responsibilities Include

30% - Provide and coordinate Academic support and programming to Student Athletes

  • Collaborate with coaching staff for assigned sport(s) to design and implement academic support plans for student-athletes including consistent and frequent feedback.
  • Counsel and advise student-athletes in establishing realistic and attainable goals regarding course and major selection, study skills, time management and career choices.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement individualized academic support plans for intensive monitoring of identified student-athlete population including the assessment and evaluation of individual students to determine needs for support.
  • Check implemented academic notes system frequently for knowledge on high-risk students.
  • Manage appropriate major/minor selections.
  • Advise and enroll all new freshmen in responsible sports, mid-year enrollees, and transfers both 4-year transfers and Junior College transfers.
  • Helps facilitate workshops/trainings provided to students to assist them in their development as an university student.

25% - Collaboration with University Partners and Coaches

  • Collaborate with academic advisors to review student-athletes’ class scheduling, degree plans, tutorial services, Northern Arizona University and NCAA academic standing and progress toward degree.
  • Report key academic notes for weekly meeting and dissemination to coaches.
  • Ensure that student-athletes who are meeting/enrolling with advisors on campus, have appropriate schedules that don’t conflict with practice times and meet eligibility criteria
  • Communicate with partners including Athletic Training, on campus advisors, Disability Resources, Learning Specialists, and the Academic Success Center and provide referrals to these partners when needed.
  • Send out weekly grades update to the assistant coaches of respective teams for sports with high and medium risk students.
  • Collaborates with various campus partners to identify strategies for student retention and success.

25% - Knowledge of and enforcement of University and NCAA policies and procedures

  • Well-versed in Compliance/Eligibility and will monitor the eligibility closely of caseload students in coordination with the Compliance Eligibility Coordinator
  • Utilize Compliance software including potentially approving various forms & processes in order to remain in compliance with NCAA rules.
  • For incoming student-athletes and outgoing student-athletes, confirm completed paperwork & tracers to matriculate them successfully within the Compliance System or NCAA Transfer.
  • Communicate with student-athletes, coaches, and other applicable administrative staff regarding assigned student-athletes’ academic records in regards to matriculation, graduation and NCAA eligibility.
  • Stay current with national, regional and local governing organizations (N4A, NCAA Regional Rules, etc.).
  • Maintain confidential student files and records documenting all pertinent student-athlete academic and NCAA eligibility information within the Department, University, NCAA, and FERPA regulations.
  • Responsible for strict adherence to NCAA, conference, and University rules and regulations.

10% - Administrative Duties

  • Perform administrative duties essential to the daily functioning of the department.
  • Helps maintain department related data used to conduct research and evaluate program effectiveness.

5%- Department Representative.

  • Be an active participant in recruiting prospective student athletes when requested to give academic presentations about the internal support services offered.

5% - Other duties as assigned 

  • May supervise or oversee Graduate Assistants, post eligibility students and/or interns.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree.
  • 2 years of experience working with Division I student-athletes in an academic support setting or relevant experience.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience with at-risk students in an academic support/mentoring setting.
  • Experience working with football or basketball athletes strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience with designing and providing academic strategies and resources for student-athletes.
  • Former licensed educator, student-athlete or coach.
  • Experience working with NCAA Bylaws, specifically Bylaw 14.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of student development theory.
  • Knowledge of current physical health, mental health, alcohol and drug use, and social issues on university campuses.
  • Knowledge of primary factors that impact student retention and common strategies used to increase student success.
  • Knowledge of higher education law, including FERPA, Title IX, HIPAA, etc.
  • Knowledge of primary factors that impact student retention and common strategies used to increase student success.

Compensation

Salary range begins at $44,422. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
