  • Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. About the Department/College

The Northern Arizona University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 15 men's and women's NCAA Division-I programs with more than 350 student-athlete participants. The university is a member of the Big Sky Conference for all sports with the exception of women's swimming and diving, which competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).


About the Position

Reporting to the Director of Athletic Medicine and Head Team Physician, this position is responsible for managing the healthcare and well-being of all student-athletes, ensuring the coordination of all healthcare experiences for departmental efficiency and athlete safety.

Responsibilities Include

70% - Medical Care

  • Provide high quality, evidence-based health care for Division I student athletes.
  • Prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of student athletes' injuries in a manner that reflects the mission and goals of the department, University, Big Sky Conference, and the NCAA.
  • Establish criteria for safe return to practice and competition, including return-to-play process.
  • Provide on-site medical care for practices and competitions as designated by the Director of Athletic Medicine, including travel during regular, post, and non-traditional seasons.
  • Establish and operate athletic training facilities for both practice and game situations that follow local and national standards.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of the athletic medicine program including maintaining safe, clean, organized, and efficient facilities.

25% - Administrative

  • Maintain accurate medical records for each student athlete in an Electronic Medical Record.
  • Communicate directly with the team physician and facilitate all necessary referrals to outside entities.
  • Coordinate outside services for student athletes such as counseling services, laboratory testing, imaging services, physical therapy, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Provide high quality, thorough, and regular communication to coaches, team physicians, and the athletic medicine staff regarding student athlete illness/injury and condition progress. (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act [HIPAA] and Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act [FERPA] rules apply).
  • Communicate daily status updates to strength and conditioning staff (HIPPA & FERPA rules apply).
  • Review the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs as needed for safety and appropriateness related to injury prevention and provide recommendations for change when indicated.
  • Coordinate timely processing of athletic injury related bills and filing claims directly to medical services coordinator.
  • Establish a safe practice and playing environment by monitoring environmental risk factors such as weather conditions. 

5% - Other

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Athletic Trainer, Intermediate (Assistant Athletic Trainer)

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree.
  • 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Certification through the National Athletic Trainer’s Association, Board of Certification.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid.
  • Licensed or qualified to apply for licensure in the State of Arizona

Athletic Trainer, Senior (Associate Athletic Trainer)

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree.
  • 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Certification through the National Athletic Trainer’s Association, Board of Certification.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid.
  • Licensed or qualified to apply for licensure in the State of Arizona

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree (Master's, PhD, or equivalent).
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Currently licensed by the Arizona Board of Athletic Training.
  • Additional clinical skills such as Dry Needling, ART, IASTM, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of collegiate athletics and student-athlete demands, including NCAA rules.
  • Knowledge of athletic training and conditioning programs and routines.
  • Knowledge of CPR, first aid, and emergency procedures.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and accounting principles.

Essential Physical Requirements

  • Moderate physical activity.
  • Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Compensation

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Salary range begins at $38,628. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Associate Athletic Trainer

Salary range begins at $44,422. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
