The Student Development Coordinator, Senior is a member of a dynamic team committed to access and success for first-generation students at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Within the context of a Hispanic-serving institution and as a Champion institution within NASPA’s First-Gen Forward Network, NAU’s First-Generation Programs Office is a leader in serving diverse first-generation students who represent a substantial portion of the student body.


About the Position

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the Student Development Coordinator, Sr., assists in the daily operations of the TRIO Student Support Services program. The Coordinator must demonstrate a solid understanding of the needs of first-generation, income-eligible, and students with disabilities in higher education to administer non-academic support and guidance to assigned students of all class levels. The Coordinator is responsible for collaborating with the Assistant Director on data-driven decisions to ensure that the program's first- and second-year students have meaningful and purposeful experiences and interactions, thereby fostering a successful foundation for retention and a path towards graduation.

The position is responsible for providing direct support services to participants in the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program, promoting student retention and graduation. This role includes advising students on academic, career, and personal development; monitoring student progress; and coordinating referrals to appropriate campus resources. The position also plays a key role in collaborating with campus partners, planning cultural and educational events, and maintaining accurate student records and departmental data for federal reporting.

Additionally, the position assists with the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of 5–7 Peer Mentor student employees, providing training and ensuring adherence to best practices aligned with grant objectives. The role supports program recruitment efforts by engaging prospective participants and stakeholders through presentations and outreach, and assesses program effectiveness using relevant data to guide strategic improvements.

Responsibilities Include

40% - Partnering with Students and Stakeholders

  • Provides direct services to SSS participants so that they may be retained and graduate.
  • Maintains accurate and complete files on students, documenting all services, contacts, and activities.
  • Assesses participants’ wellness (academic, career, and personal) and promotes student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Advises participants on general academic, career, and personal options; assists them in developing coping skills and study habits necessary for academic retention and graduation; makes appropriate referrals to campus resources or academic advisors.
  • Monitors participants’ academic status, analyzes progress reports, and identifies current and potential areas to be addressed. Assists students in establishing realistic and attainable academic, career and personal goals.
  • Reviews student progress; follows up on progress through personal contact, phone calls, e-mail and other electronic correspondence.
  • Acts as a liaison between students and campus partners to clarify various policies and procedures; assists students in the completion of complex forms and other university documents.
  • Collaborates with various campus partners to identify strategies for student retention and success.
  • Coordinates the planning of department programs and events such as cultural and educational events.
  • Serves as a liaison to key campus partners, including the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Academic Success Center, Disability Resources, Career Development, etc.

30% - Hiring and Supervision

  • Assists with the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of student employees.
  • Supervises 5-7 Peer Mentor student employees.
  • Assists with the training of staff, focusing on advising policies, trends, and the application of advising techniques within the SSS program.
  • Implements best practices in accordance with the grant objectives and outcomes; helps set standards and program focus alongside the Assistant Director.

25% - Program Recruitment and Assessment

  • Actively participates in the recruitment of first-generation, income-eligible, and students with disabilities to the program.
  • Presents First-Generation Programs and TRIO Student Support Services information to internal and external stakeholders (e.g., prospective students, campus partners, and student employees). This includes informal tabling and formal presentations.
  • Gathers and assesses relevant reports and recommends programmatic changes based on participant data with a focus on first- and second-year retention and persistence.
  • Maintains department-related data for federal reporting and to evaluate program effectiveness, including participant satisfaction, event reflection, and other relevant surveys.
  • Collaborates with various campus partners to identify strategies for student retention and success.
  • Maintains social media platforms, online calendar, and website to inform about events, engagement opportunities, etc.

5% - Other

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 3-5 years of experience in mentoring, student support services, advisement, and/or
    teaching.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree 
  • Two years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience working with first-generation and/or low-income students, students with disabilities or historically underrepresented
    students
  • Previous experience with providing individual counseling, academic advising, mentoring, and/or coaching of
    college students.
  • Previous experience working with TRIO programs.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of student development theory.
  • Knowledge of current physical health, mental health, alcohol and drug use, and social issues on university campuses.
  • Knowledge of primary factors that impact student retention and common strategies used to increase student success.
  • Knowledge of higher education law, including FERPA, Title IX, HIPAA, etc.

Compensation

Budgeted salary is $51,085. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
