About the Position

The International Student & Scholar Advisor, Sr. will work directly with students, faculty, and staff to support a successful and positive experience for NAU international students and scholars. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) works with students on immigration questions prior to, and upon their arrival at NAU during Orientation, and acts as their guide throughout their time on NAU's beautiful Flagstaff Mountain campus, helping them navigate immigration regulations, academic adjustments, and cultural integration. ISSS also works with university departments to bring J-1 research scholars and international employees to campus, enhancing the research environment on campus and supporting their experience while in Flagstaff.

The International Student/Scholar Advisor, Sr. provides individual student/scholar advising relating to immigration status, changes in immigration regulations, compliance, university enrollment, and general topics relating to cultural adjustment and life at a US university. This role is expected to independently follow established F1 and/or J1 procedures to accurately report and maintain university regulatory compliance with DHS/DOS; lead and support programming efforts; act as an advocate for international students at the university to support a positive experience. The ISSS Sr. Advisor position requires full in-person presence on the Flagstaff Mountain campus, serving as DSO and ARO.

Responsibilities Include

45% - Student/Scholar Advising

  • Independently advise students and scholars on academic support resources, university resources, adjustment issues, personal and family concerns, and in emergency situations
  • Provide regular communications regarding regulatory updates with the student and scholar community to support their understanding of how to comply with government regulations
  • Advise sponsored international students specifically to meet their needs as a sponsored student and provide access to specialized resources
  • Review academic progress of students, communicate academic progress with sponsors and develop programs and services to enhance student success
  • Process insurance waivers for international sponsored students according to university policy each fall and spring semester
  • Manage data and required documentation that must be provided to sponsoring agencies - (Essential)

40% - Compliance

  • Serve as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer to support both F-1 and J-1 students and scholars
  • Independently advise F-1 and J-1 students and scholars to support their compliance with F-1 and J-1 regulations
  • Interpret and implement F-1 and J-1 regulations, and develop institutional policies and procedures together with the ISSS team
  • Support reporting within regulatory deadlines to ensure university SEVIS compliance for new and continuing students and scholars through the use of Sunapsis, Peoplesoft, Salesforce and other technology platforms
  • Maintain data integrity in Sunapsis and Peoplesoft to support university regulatory compliance
  • Stay up to date on knowledge of federal immigration regulations to advise international students and scholars in F-1 and J-1 status on immigration regulations as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
  • Maintain working relationships with government and partner institution representatives on immigration requirements and legislative updates and their impacts; Liaise with various government agencies, including but not limited to U.S. Department of Homeland Security (including SEVP and USCIS) and U.S. Department of State - (Essential)

10% - Events

  • Develop, participate in, and evaluate educational presentations, workshops, programs, and activities related to immigration regulations, cultural adjustment, and intercultural competency
  • Lead and support programming experiences for students and scholars including orientation, cultural excursions, new student cultural transition support etc.
  • Engage with the University community and offices to promote the role of ISSS and the needs of international students and scholars - (Essential)

5% - Other

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services. - (Marginal)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree.
  • 3 years of relevant experience.
  • US citizenship or lawful permanent residence status (necessary to qualify as a DSO and ARO).

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

The educational requirements, experience, and skills preferred, but not necessary, to perform in the position.

  • Experience in international student & scholar services office.
  • Experience as a DSO and ARO.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Experience with issues specific to international student populations and communicating the needs of the international community with academic and campus support services.
  • Demonstrated leadership in student success driven programming.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of US immigration regulations affecting non-immigrants in F-1 and J-1 student.
  • Knowledge of immigration law and college policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of cultural contexts of international students to provide effective guidance and information to those unfamiliar with the US culture and educational systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies, and procedures to remain compliant with the Department of Homeland Security.

Compensation

Salary range begins at $51,085. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
