  • Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. About the Department/College

The Northern Arizona University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 15 men's and women's NCAA Division-I programs with more than 350 student-athlete participants. The university is a member of the Big Sky Conference for all sports with the exception of women's swimming and diving, which competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).


About the Position

The Director of Olympic Sports Strength & Conditioning Coach provides critical support in the development, implementation, and supervision of comprehensive strength and conditioning programs for one or more of Northern Arizona University’s (NAU) athletic teams. This role operates within the framework of NCAA Operating Bylaws and university policies, emphasizing athlete safety, performance enhancement, and holistic development.

Working collaboratively with sport coaches, athletic trainers, and medical personnel, the coach designs sport-specific training plans, integrates injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies, and ensures consistent, safe, and effective use of the weight room and training facilities. The Director of Olympic Sports Strength & Conditioning Coach plays a lead role in maintaining a positive training environment that supports the physical and mental well-being of student-athletes.

Responsibilities Include

80% - Coaching

  • Supervise and administer the strength and conditioning program for student athletes of all sports.
  • Develop and administer the strength and conditioning programs for selected sports programs.
  • Work closely with the Athletic Training Program and the department medical staff in planning and implementing rehab programs for student-athletes.
  • Maintain a safe and effective weight room with a focus on the health and welfare of the student-athlete.
  • Administer the program in compliance with all University and NCAA rules and fulfill all duties assigned by the Senior Associate AD for Athletic Medicine / Sports Performance.

15% - Administrative/Supervision

  • Recruit and hire all graduate assistants and student interns.
  • Supervise Assistant Strength Coach
  • Supervise the graduate assistants as assigned.
  • Schedule and provide supervision of the weight room and conditioning areas to provide the highest possible success for the student athletes.
  • Monitoring and purchasing of equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Management of budget for Strength and Conditioning that is shared with Nutrition.
  • Management of apparel budget for Strength and Conditioning

5% - Other

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
  • 2 - 4 years of relevant experience.
  • A Certified Strenth & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certification (SCCC)
  • CPR and First Aid Certified.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with all Olympic lifts and variations.
  • Must possess current AZ Driver’s License.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Greater than 2 years’ experience as a collegiate Strength and Conditioning coach.
  • Experience with any of the following: women’s basketball, men’s basketball, volleyball, women’s soccer, football.
  • USA Weightlifting (USAW) Certification.
  • Nutritional Education.

  • Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the sport.
  • Knowledge of collegiate athletics and student-athlete demands, including NCAA rules.
  • Knowledge of athletic training and conditioning programs and routines.
  • Knowledge of athletic equipment care and maintenance techniques.

  • Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in area of sporting specialty.
  • Analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking.

Abilities

  • Communicates effectively.
  • Works effectively with student-athletes.
  • Year round periodized programs for lifting, agility, and conditioning.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Olympic lifts and variations.
  • Must have a working knowledge of conditioning, speed, and agility training.
  • Must have a working knowledge of modern periodization models.
  • Essential Physical Requirements.
  • Moderate physical activity.
  • Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Compensation

Salary range begins at $51,085. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
