The Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University continues a proud tradition of training the next generation of music teachers, performers, and scholars for the State of Arizona and the Southwest. Kitt School of Music is a vibrant community within Northern Arizona University serving approximately 250 music majors and hundreds of music minors and non-music majors. The School offers three undergraduate degrees in music (Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts) and the Master of Music (seven concentrations including Instrumental Performance). Studio faculty frequently model artistic excellence through performances in solo, chamber, and ensemble settings. About the Position

The Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University seeks a dynamic, creative, performer-educator of trombone. The successful candidate will be an inspiring teacher, accomplished performer, and active scholar/artist who will contribute to the growth of the brass area, jazz studies, and the broader mission of the Kitt School of Music. This position emphasizes applied trombone instruction, jazz ensemble direction, chamber music coaching, courses in pedagogy and literature, and active participation in recruitment, performance, and service. This position can be a Assistant Professor of Practice or Assistant Teaching Professor.

Responsibilities Include
  • Teach applied trombone and related areas (bass trombone), brass/trombone methods, chamber music, trombone literature, trombone pedagogy to undergraduate and graduate music majors and minors; - (Essential)
  • Lead ensembles and combos in jazz or commercial idioms; - (Essential)
  • Teach in a secondary area of expertise, such as music theory, ear training, improvisation, jazz studies (improvisation, arranging, jazz history) or introductory general studies in music (Western classical or popular genres); - (Essential)
  • Recruit outstanding students; - (Essential)
  • Perform with Kitt School of Music faculty in solo and chamber music settings, including with the Elden Brass Quintet; - (Essential)
  • Maintain a performing or research agenda; - (Essential)
  • Serve on faculty committees and contribute to departmental governance; - (Essential)
  • Mentor students in academic, professional, and career development; - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

Assistant Professor of Practice:

  • Master’s degree in performance or related field.
  • Five years of experience performing trombone in classical and jazz idioms.

For Assistant Teaching Professor:

  • Doctorate in performance.
  • Experience performing trombone in classical and jazz idioms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in teaching performers and future educators at the university/collegiate level.
  • Extensive and varied experience as performer or recording artist.
  • An established record of success in recruiting at the collegiate level.
  • Evidence of potential for ongoing excellence in scholarly/creative contributions to the profession.
  • Experience leading jazz ensemble or combos.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of current trends in pedagogy and performance of trombone.
  • Knowledge of chamber music literature and ensemble coaching techniques.
  • Effective recruitment and student engagement strategies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty in applied, ensemble, and academic areas in music.
  • Ability to mentor and advise students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels.

Compensation

Budgeted salary is $60,000.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
