  • This position is a hybrid position which allows the incumbent to complete their work at both an NAU site, campus, or facility and at a non-centralized site with or without accommodation.

  • Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. About the Department/College

In partnership with the Helios Education Foundation, the AZ Ahead Program represents a collaborative effort between Northern Arizona University and colleges across northern Arizona to improve post-secondary educational attainment throughout the state. The program is designed to increase college retention, persistence, and baccalaureate degree completion rates by providing targeted support to a diverse range of students. These include transfer students, adult learners, individuals on academic probation, students who have paused their education (stop-outs), and historically underserved populations. Through this initiative, AZ Ahead aims to create more equitable pathways to degree completion and long-term success.


About the Position

Northern Arizona University is seeking a Student Development Coordinator, Senior to support the AZ Ahead program within the Office of Economic Mobility and Social Impact. This position is based at Mohave College – Neal Campus Kingman in Mohave County and plays a vital role in coordinating student-focused programming and operational support for AZ Ahead. The coordinator will work closely with college staff, community partners, and NAU leadership to advance educational access and student success. Responsibilities may shift depending on the evolving needs of each participating college.

This role requires travel throughout Arizona and occasional evening and weekend work. Candidates must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record. Responsibilities Include

65% - Student Support

  • Recruit and identify eligible students for the program, collaborating with institutional staff to build a strong pipeline of eligible participants through coordinated outreach and engagement.
  • Conduct proactive outreach and intervention activities with students, using strategies proven to be effective at scale in improving persistence and academic success.
  • Conduct active outreach to engage students who may be reluctant to utilize campus resources.
  • Initiate and maintain frequent contact with students through one-on-one interactions and in group settings to overcome obstacles to their academic success and to achieve their educational goals and discussing challenges and progress.
  • Develop meaningful relationships with students based on empathy, compassion, and appreciative, developmental, and intrusive advising approaches.
  • Assess students' needs, develop individualized success plans to address challenges, and connect them to financial aid and support resources to improve attainment.
  • Serve as a resource, advocate, and mentor for assigned students and connect to institutional resources, services, and systems.
  • Actively follow-up with students on resource utilization.
  • Take proactive measures to ensure prompt resolution of any potential obstacles, respond to student questions and concerns.
  • Work with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction with program and successful progress to degree completion.
  • Act as a positive representative of outreach and support, and a positive role model for students and at campus and community events, leading communities of practice through the role.
  • Assist with planning, promoting, executing, and evaluating programs that encourage engagement, growth, and persistence, while providing students with a well-rounded college experiences that fosters career readiness and upward mobility.
  • Uses aptitude and/or other assessments to help students explore their interests, skills, and abilities.
  • Create prescriptive assignments/expectations for students based on their circumstances/individual needs.
  • Assist in the implementation, and assess academic recovery and success programs, workshops, and series to assist struggling students. - (Essential)

20% - Caseload Management

  • Manage a caseload of students documenting and reporting on obstacles, success plans and overall persistence.
  • Work closely with AZ Ahead Team staff, institution faculty and staff, student employees and other support teams to facilitate student success for assigned caseload.
  • Collaborate effectively with campus departments to implement intervention strategies to facilitate and support student success and facilitate transition pathways to education, training, employment opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed contact notes, track student performance, and develop reports on the academic success and graduation of target populations.
  • Utilize outreach lists strategically to identify students who may benefit from additional support and collaborate with institutional and program staff to determine the most effective support strategy.
  • Provide updates/reporting on the progress and challenges of the students within the caseload as needed. - (Essential)

10% - Program Design and Outreach

  • Collaborate as part of the AZ Ahead Team to develop a service design model that ensures comprehensive student support, adapts to unique student needs, and scales promising practices across institutions.
  • Assist in coordinating college wide academic support programs and in developing college wide interventions that provide innovative, meaningful, and supportive experiences to students that integrate academic learning and individual growth.
  • Serve as a resource for other professionals by providing consultation and professional development opportunities across campus to enhance understanding of campus policies and resources to support students.
  • Partner with university, college, and community offices, departments, and programs to facilitate and support student success initiatives.
  • Assess student progress and programming measured both quantitatively (retention, persistence, grades etc.) and qualitatively through student experience surveys and other reflective feedback to align with Access, Success, Attainment, Prosperity (ASAP) framework.
  • Represents the department or work unit on various committees, work groups and employee forums to amplify impact across institutions.
  • Maintains online calendar, websites, and social media sites to inform participants and community about events, activities, engagement opportunities, etc. - (Essential)

 

5% - Other Duties As Assigned

  • Requires some travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, student personnel, social work, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in higher education working with students.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Extensive experience working with college students in the A++ program in areas such as academic advising, academic coaching, counseling, orientation, residence life, student activities, fiscal supports, ideation, and program implementation.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of higher education law, including FERPA, Title IX, HIPAA, etc.
  • Knowledge of primary factors that impact student retention and common strategies used to increase student success
  • Understanding of issues facing contemporary college students and of university systems and structures
  • Intermediate knowledge of educational advising, success coaching, tutoring, principles, practices, techniques, and theory
  • Knowledge of Mohave College student resources, referrals, and services
  • Knowledge of the goals and objectives of the A++ and AZ Ahead programs to influence and improve economic mobility and social impact for students across Arizona’s postsecondary landscape
  • Knowledge of Mohave College’s student population and unique needs
  • Knowledge of A++ ASAP metrics framework

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc)
  • Skill in listening to issues, synthesizing information, and reaching sound conclusions

Compensation

Salary range begins at $51,085. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
