- This position is a hybrid position which allows the incumbent to complete their work at both an NAU site, campus, or facility and at a non-centralized site with or without accommodation.
- This position is subject to the availability of funding through October 2026. The incumbent is not eligible for Service Professional non-renewal notice, or Classified Staff layoff or recall status.
- Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. - This position requires travel and some work on evenings and weekends including any of the Maricopa Community College District
campuses, including Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

About the Department/College
Reporting to the Transfer Jacks Program Manager, the Student Development Coordinator, Sr. oversees the Jacks State program within Peer Jacks Mentoring, serving Universal Admissions and Statewide students. This role fosters student success by coordinating high-impact mentoring and support services that integrate academic learning with personal development. The coordinator oversees the Jacks State program, supervises its mentors, and additionally provides focused concierge student support services for Universal Admissions students. The coordinator is someone who builds strong, individualized relationships with students and community college advisors, leveraging data-informed strategies to provide proactive, holistic guidance across enrollment, financial aid, academics, and career planning
About the Position
As part of both NAU’s Peer Jacks Mentoring Department and the Arizona Attainment Alliance (A++) initiative, the coordinator collaborates with community colleges and university partners to ensure seamless transitions and sustained engagement. Through low student-to-staff ratios and a concierge advising model, the position ensures students receive timely, tailored support that promotes persistence and degree completion.
Responsibilities Include
30% - Student Support
- Conduct proactive outreach and intervention activities with students, selecting those strategies where there is a strong likelihood of making a difference in student persistence and academic success.
- Initiate, maintain and document frequent contact with students through one-on-one interactions and in group settings to overcome obstacles to their academic success and to achieve their educational goals, and discussing challenges and progress.
- Serve as a resource, advocate, and mentor for assigned students and connect to institutional resources, services, and systems. Actively follow-up with students on resource utilization.
- Assist with planning, promoting, executing, and evaluating programming designed to encourage engagement, growth, and persistence seeking to provide a full and well-rounded university experience.
- Create prescriptive assignments/expectations for students based on their circumstances/individual needs.
- Assist in the implementation, and assess academic recovery and success programs, workshops, and series to assist struggling students.
20% - Caseload Management
- Manage a caseload of students documenting and reporting on obstacles, success plans and overall persistence.
- Work closely with NAU and community college staff, student employees, and other support teams to facilitate student success for assigned caseload.
- Maintain accurate and detailed contact notes, track student performance, and develop reports on the academic success and graduation of target populations.
- Utilize outreach lists strategically to identify students who may be struggling and/or may benefit from additional support. Collaborate with the Office of Economic Mobility and Social Impact to determine the best course of action.
15% - Program Support
- Provide structure and supervision for the Jacks State Mentoring program, coordinating program activities and services to ensure that goals and objectives are met.
- Serves as a liaison for students and other departments within the University and within the larger NAU and Arizona Community College / A++ community to help them succeed.
- Assists with the design, implementation, and evaluation of services that provide innovative, meaningful and supportive experiences to students that integrate academic learning and individual growth.
- Assist with program budgeting and purchase approval processes.
- Provides guidance and consistency in policy and procedure decisions within the department.
- Collaborates with faculty, student affairs staff, and other university departments in creating experiences to increase student engagement.
15% - Supervision
- Recruits, hires, supervises and evaluates a team of 3-5 peer mentors.
- Participate in the planning and facilitation of peer mentor training throughout the summer and academic year.
10% - Collaborations & Activities
- Conduct active outreach alongside college staff to identify eligible students who would benefit from concierge services.
- Collaborate and meet regularly with the Office of Economic Mobility and Social Impact Team to develop a service design model that ensures comprehensive student support and adapts to unique student needs.
- Assist in coordinating college-wide academic support programs and in developing college-wide interventions that provide innovative, meaningful, and supportive experiences to students that integrate academic learning and individual growth.
- Serve as a resource for other professionals by providing consultation and professional development opportunities across campus to enhance understanding of campus policies and resources to support students.
- Assess student progress and programming measured both quantitatively (retention, persistence, grades etc.) and qualitatively through student experience surveys and other reflective feedback.
- Represents the department or work unit on various committees, work groups and employee forums.
- Maintains online calendar, websites, and social media sites to inform participants and community about events, activities, engagement opportunities, etc.
- Helps facilitate workshops / trainings provided to students to assist them in their development as a university student.
- Assist in the planning and hosting of program fieldtrips, events, and opportunities for mentees to engage and connect outside of one-on-one meetings.
- Coordinates with peer mentors the creating/maintenance of a semester event calendar for program, NAU and community events, through social media platforms, online calendars, and website.
5% - Assessment
- Uses aptitude and achievement assessments to help students explore their interests, skills, and abilities.
- Collaborates with various campus partners to identify strategies for student retention and success.
- Helps maintain department related data used to conduct research and evaluate program effectiveness.
5% - Other
- May require some travel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate bachelor’s degree.
- 3 years of relevant experience.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education, Educational Administration, Counseling, or related field Leadership curriculum development.
- Experience with peer mentoring best practices.
- Experience in supervision of student employees.
- Background in training development & facilitation.
- Intermediate user of PeopleSoft & Salesforce.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of student development theory.
- Knowledge of current physical health, mental health, alcohol & drug use, & social issues on university campuses.
- Knowledge of primary factors that impact student retention & common strategies used to increase student success.
- Knowledge of higher education law, including FERPA, Title IX, HIPAA, etc.

Compensation
Budgeted salary is $51,085. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report
Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
