The Northern Arizona University College of Nursing continues to build a world-class team of curious, creative, scholarly, and responsive faculty to positively impact the nursing profession in Arizona and beyond. Nursing offers the undergraduate program at locations around the state of Arizona including Flagstaff, Phoenix (North Valley), Tucson, and Yuma. Some degree programs are also offered online. The College of Nursing is growing in order to meet the demand for nurses around the state, especially in rural and underserved areas.


About the Position

This is an in-person position at the North Valley Campus, sometimes requiring a nontraditional work schedule to accommodate the needs of the Simulation Center and College of Nursing students. The Simulationist acts as both simulation educator and facilitator. They facilitate the operation of nursing simulation lab, overseas the preparation, maintenance, inventory, and operation of nursing simulation equipment/supplies and collaborates with faculty including course development, outcomes including design, plan, implement and schedule simulation activities. The Simulationist ensures adherence to program policies, course objectives, program outcomes and current simulation best practice and safety measures. This position is a 12-month, full-time placement. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required. This position will report to North Valley Director.

Responsibilities Include

60% - Simulation Lab Educator

  • Develop simulation curricula to support program and course outcomes.
  • Conduct debriefing within scope of knowledge or assist content expert with debriefing.
  • Incorporate best practice and evidenced-based research in program development with a focus on standardization and efficiencies across the healthcare continuum.
  • Coordinate the set up and maintenance of computer-based training programs for simulation.
  • Coordinate and supervise the general operation of the simulation laboratory to provide a wide variety of patient simulation experiences.
  • Provide recommendations for equipment and supply purchases anticipating future changes in technology.
  • Participate in program and curriculum review; offering suggestions concerning the improvement of curriculum in keeping with the mission and vision of the College.
  • Ensures safety for all users.
  • Maintain laboratory to meet regulation and accreditation standards.
  • Follows simulation protocols for each course.

25% - Direct Lab Support and Maintenance

  • Oversee the set up and take down of simulation laboratory equipment – allowing for turnover of the simulation lab set up as necessary to accommodate multiple groups.
  • Oversee the regular maintenance and repair all simulation equipment, including:
    • Human patient simulators (HPS), computers, monitors and a variety of clinical medical equipment.
    • Audiovisual and debriefing systems.
  • Communicate effectively with manufacturers regarding warranty, maintenance, repair, update, and technology changes.
    • Coordinate upgrades to software and equipment as needed.
  • Provide technical support for task trainers (skills lab) and multimedia peripherals including, but not limited to:
    • Beds/examination tables, headwalls, patient monitors, and other health care equipment.
    • Medication dispensing systems.
    • Vital sign monitors.
  • Organize and restock simulation laboratory supplies.

10% - Administrative Support

  • Facilitate tours of simulation lab when needed.
  • Prepare and submit instructional records, reports, grades, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner meeting all deadlines, checking for accuracy, correctness and completeness of all data.
  • Exert an effort to remain current in discipline and instructional methods through professional development activities offered by the College and other opportunities including attendance at off-campus activities, webinars, etc., as feasible.
  • Serve on the CON Simulation Committee.
  • Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings, and other announced co-curricular activities of the College.

5% - Other

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • 2 years full time clinical experience.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year experience operating simulation equipment.
  • Bachelors in Nursing.
  • Nursing experience.
  • Strong clinical skillset.
  • SIM expertise.

Knowledge

  • Understanding of simulation design, planning, preparation, and implementation.
  • Knowledge of operation of standard audio-visual equipment.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices, techniques, and standards.
  • Expert level knowledge of methods, materials, and techniques used in simulation laboratory work.

Skills

  • Program development and execution.
  • Organizational and project management skills.
  • Development and maintenance of a budget.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Mechanical skills to maintain and use simulation equipment.

Abilities

  • Transfers knowledge and application of complex principles, theories, and concepts to peers.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Essential Physical Requirements: Physical ability to lift, move, maintain, and set up computer, audio-visual and simulation lab equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. without assistance.

Compensation

Salary range begins at $77,871. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
