About the Department/College

Campus Health serves as an integrated care clinic, providing services including: comprehensive primary medical care, lab services, immunizations, same-day appointments for urgent concerns, psychiatric services, behavioral health, physical therapy, and counseling services.


About the Position

Participates as a vital member of the health care team, providing ambulatory nursing care to college students, faculty and staff of NAU. This care includes basic data collection and documentation of patient status; observing, administering and documenting approved nursing procedures; attending to patients’ comfort needs: and performing other specific duties as needed by the nursing unit under the supervision of a physician, nurse practitioner (NP), registered nurse (RN).

Responsibilities Include

35% - Indirect Patient Care

  • Documents appropriately in the electronic health record (EHR) including all interventions, phone conversations, or other interactions.
  • Reports mandated information to the public health dept/other designated officials.
  • Responsible for cleaning and sterilizing instruments and maintaining a clean and hygienic work environment.
  • Stocks and maintains supplies.
  • Schedules appointments and conducts pre-authorizations for clinicians as needed.
  • Maintains a safe work environment by following CHS Infection Control policy and OSHA guidelines.
  • Proactively collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to meet patient needs, promote continuity of care and optimize patient outcomes.

30% - Provider Staff Support

  • Prepares patients for health care visits and rooms patients per protocol.
  • Assists medical provider with exams and procedures as appropriately delegated.
  • Serve as chaperone for exams of a sensitive nature or when requested by a patient.
  • Skilled in accurate reconciliation of patient’s medical history with each visit.

30% - Direct Patient Care

  • Clearly communicates and coordinates patient care with providers in a timely manner to ensure that patient needs are met and the plan of care from arrival to departure is optimized.
  • Coordinate and schedule any patient follow-up care as requested/directed.
  • Provides basic patient education as directed. Administers medications and immunizations as ordered by the medical provider and in compliance with CHS policies and procedures.
  • May assist with other patient care duties (within scope of practice) as delegated by MD, NP, PA, or RN.
  • Skilled in performing point of care testing, clinical diagnostics (spirometry, EKG’s) Experienced working with all age groups and diverse populations.

5% - Other 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school degree and successful completion of all training requirements as outlined by the Arizona Medical Board.
  • 1 years of relevant experience.
  • Medical Assistant Certification or must obtain certification within six months of hire
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.

  • Front and back office medical assisting experience

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Health, Safety, and Emergency Preparedness policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of documenting services provided in an electronic medical record system.
  • Knowledge of risk for exposure to infectious material and communicable diseases.
  • Knowledge of patient rights, patient consent, confidentiality, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Skills

  • Customer service skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and use of the electronic health record program.

Compensation

Salary range is $45,000-$48,285. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Also, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
