Special Information
- There are multiple positions available. These opportunities are open exclusively to current TDI contract employees whose contracts are ending and who are serving the NAU campus.
- The successful candidate for this position will be required to pass both FBI and CDC background checks for work in essential laboratory and research buildings.
- Candidate should be comfortable working in confined spaces, around high temperature hot water, high pressure steam, and high voltage.
- Employees of the HVAC department are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate in on-call and call back duties, which can include days, nights and weekends.
- This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
- This position may be filled at the Base, Intermediate, or Senior HVAC Mechanic level, depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. Final placement will be determined by the hiring manager.
- Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. About the Position
The HVAC Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and servicing mechanical systems across campus to ensure safe and efficient operation. Key duties include troubleshooting and diagnosing system issues, responding promptly to service calls, and assisting full-time HVAC Mechanics with complex repairs and installations. The selected candidate will be expected to enter time and work details daily, communicate effectively with coworkers and campus customers, and follow all safety protocols. This role also involves participating in training opportunities to support continued learning and development. Candidates should be comfortable working in confined spaces and around high-temperature hot water, high-pressure steam, and high-voltage equipment.
This position reports to the Manager, HVAC in NAU’s Facility Services.
Responsibilities Include
HVAC Mechanic, Base
40% - Maintenance & Operations
- Perform routine maintenance on mechanical systems across campus.
- Replace filters, belts, and other basic components.
- Assist with cleaning and inspecting HVAC equipment.
40% - Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
- Identify and report mechanical issues.
- Assist full-time mechanics in diagnosing system failures.
- Use basic tools and meters to support troubleshooting.
10% - Customer Service
- Respond to service calls professionally.
- Enter time and work details daily.
- Maintain clear communication with coworkers and campus customers.
5% - Safety & Training
- Follow established safety protocols.
- Participate in required training sessions.
- Use appropriate PPE and tools safely.

HVAC Mechanic, Intermediate
60% - Maintenance & Operations
- Maintain and repair HVAC systems including pumps, valves, actuators, coils, and compressors.
- Troubleshoot digital and pneumatic controls.
- Support building automation systems for energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
- Respond to trouble calls across multiple buildings.
- Stay current with industry practices and suggest process improvements..

HVAC Mechanic, Senior
75% - Field Operations & System Management
- Analyze blueprints and schematics to plan installations and repairs.
- Install and maintain advanced HVAC systems including DDC sensors, control panels, and energy management systems.
- Diagnose and resolve system failures affecting indoor air quality and thermal comfort.
- Fabricate or source specialty parts.
- Monitor contract work and ensure compliance with standards.
- Perform emergency, predictive, and preventive maintenance.
- Prioritize work orders based on health and safety needs.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications
HVAC Mechanic, Base
- High school degree.
- 1 year of HVAC work experience
HVAC Mechanic Intermediate
- High school degree.
- 2 years of HVAC work experience
HVAC Mechanic, Senior
- High school degree.
- 3 years of HVAC work experience.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
All:
- Completion of a four year federally approved technical training program in the repair and maintenance of HVAC/ refrigeration.
HVAC Mechanic Base
- 6 months experience in the HVAC field in a service role.
- Experience with electrical troubleshooting.
HVAC Mechanic Intermediate
- All above and including the following.
- Direct Digital Control experience
- A/C Air Condition Service Background
HVAC Mechanic Senior
- All above and including the following.
- Higher Education HVAC system experience

Compensation
HVAC Mechanic, Base
- Salary range is $38,628 - $48,285. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
HVAC Mechanic, Intermediate
- Salary range is $44,422 - $55,527. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
HVAC Mechanic, Senior
- Salary range is $51,085 - $63,856. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report
Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
