About the Department/College

The Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) is the university’s centralized office responsible for authorizing extramural funding proposals submitted to sponsors, negotiating with sponsors, and accepting awards. It has the institutional responsibility for assuring the Arizona State Board of Regents (ABOR), the public, and the Federal Government that the university has in-place systems and best practices for internal controls and fiscal accountability for sponsored project funds awarded to NAU.


About the Position

Grant Fund Managers assist faculty and sponsored projects administrators in all aspects of grant administration with a focus on non-routine financial post-award fund management, to manage award funds and ensure compliance with sponsor terms and conditions. Fund Managers support the management of restricted funds to increase university efficiency. They analyze and interprets contract terms to provide accurate and timely information and assure timely closeout of grant awards.

Responsibilities Include

50% - Grant and Contract Financial Management

  • Assists Principal Investigators in all aspects of managing standard grant and contract funds awarded by federal agencies and other external sponsors of university activities.
  • Gathers and analyzes data related to grant expenditures to assure compliance with sponsor terms and conditions.
  • Compares posted financial transactions to approved budgets to identify areas of divergence.
  • Assists Principal Investigators and their support staff to code and monitor financial transactions to ensure proper use of sponsored project resources.
  • Produces reports and communications that interpret grant information for Principal Investigators and their support staff.

30% - Compliance and Regulatory Guidance

  • Understands and communicates knowledge of grant terms and conditions, including federal Uniform Guidance, to assist Principal Investigators maintain compliance.
  • Analyzes and communicates grant-specific contract terms to assure compliance with non-financial reporting requirements.

15% - Training and Special Reporting

  • Participates in training sessions pertaining to post-award funds management.
  • Produces ad hoc reports to address unique situations.

5% - Other

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • 2 years of accounting experience.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Accounting experience in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of tools, procedures, processes, policies, and concepts of sponsored projects administration, specifically non-routine post-award fund management and reporting.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting in higher education and university budgeting processes.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and Uniform Guidance.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and private agency contract and grant regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of research methods, and grant and contract administration.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Skill in writing detailed numerical computations and reports.
  • Skill in computerized accounting systems and applications.

Abilities

  • Balances competing priorities.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Analyzes non-routine situations and anticipates potential issues.

Compensation

Salary range is $54,000 to $58,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Also, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
