Special Information

  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
  • Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose.   • Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate in on-call, call back duties and snow removal, which can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Under established circumstances will respond to emergency dispatch calls within set timeframes Administrative or Campus Living buildings.

About the Position

The General Maintenance Mechanics perform maintenance, repairs, and installations on residential and commercial locations including but not limited to general plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment. This position also performs moves within the university both residential and commercial utilizing delivery vehicles, dollies, hand-trucks, and other loading equipment. Safety is prioritized when performing tasks and all safety guidelines are expected to be followed as it relates to chemical, electrical, and mechanical procedures.

Responsibilities Include

35% -  Corrective Maintenance

  • Performs residential and commercial general maintenance repairs and preventive maintenance, responding to service requests and repair needs based on established priorities.
  • Responds promptly to service calls dispatched through radio, text, or the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Evaluates maintenance issues and coordinates with the appropriate skilled trades when repairs fall outside the scope of general maintenance responsibilities.
  • Adheres to all safety requirements, including job-specific hazard assessments, required training, personal protective equipment (PPE), and standard operating procedures.
  • Actively supports accident prevention initiatives and responds appropriately to injuries and incidents to help maintain a safe work environment and prevent recurrence.

30% -  Preventative Maintenance

  • Proactively identifies and reports potential issues before they impact customer use or operations.
  • Repairs issues identified during preventive maintenance inspections.
  • Performs general plumbing, electrical, and HVAC repairs and maintenance; performs minor repairs to heating, refrigeration, air conditioning units, and other electrical equipment.

10% - Managing and Recording Work Performance

  • Opens, closes, and manages work orders in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), documenting daily work activities, including work performed, labor hours, and repair scope.
  • Creates and refers work orders to the appropriate personnel or department for completion.
  • Performs basic plumbing and electrical maintenance.
  • Performs basic painting and carpentry maintenance.

10% -  Move Requests

  • Plans and assesses furniture, equipment, and departmental moves to ensure proper coordination and execution.
  • Drives trucks to transport materials such as furniture, supplies, or other equipment.

10% - On-Call First Response

  • Responding to and repairing emergency maintenance issues outside of normal operating hours.
  • When reported emergency is outside of scope of General Maintenance, referring issues to appropriate on-call trades for repair
  • Goes on on-call rotation to support after hours issues.

5% - Other 

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Provides snow removal services to areas around university buildings and facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1 year of general maintenance or repair experience.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • High school degree.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of building and equipment maintenance/repair methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of hand and electrical tools, as well as larger machinery.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships.
  • Coordination of activities and establishing priorities.
  • Records maintenance.
  • Apply equipment maintenance/repair techniques.
  • Computer/iPad skills.
  • Reads and understands technical manuals and drawings.

Essential Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

Compensation

  • Salary range begins at $43,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Also, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
