  • Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. About the Department/College

The Fire Life Safety (FLS) team at NAU plays a critical role in maintaining a safe campus environment. The department ensures compliance with fire codes, conducts inspections, and supports fire prevention and emergency preparedness across all university buildings.


About the Position

Northern Arizona University’s Fire Life Safety Department is seeking a reliable and safety-focused Fire Life Safety Coordinator, Intermediate to support the inspection, maintenance, and documentation of campus fire safety equipment. This position is responsible for maintaining handheld fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, exit signs, and assisting with basic fire protection systems and hydrant testing. The role also includes customer service, supporting fire safety education, and contributing to minor system improvements and risk mitigation efforts. Ideal candidates will have strong attention to detail, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative team environment. This position is required to participate in on-call, call back duties.

Responsibilities Include

60% - Maintain, and Inspect Campus Fire Safety Equipment

  • Maintains maintenance and inspection schedules for handheld fire extinguishers.
  • Maintains the recharge shop, recharge supplies, and materials.
  • Performs required inspections, tests, and maintenance for emergency lighting and exit signs.
  • Performs scheduled fire hydrant annual tests, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Assist other staff in basic fire systems inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Assists with required inspections, tests, and maintenance of basic fire protection systems and equipment.

15% - Customer Service 

  • Receives and responds to inquiries from campus members regarding NAU fire safety procedures and policies.
  • Escalates issues and questions to department management.
  • Communicates across departments to ensure alignment of institutional goals.
  • Supports fire safety trainings for university staff, faculty, and students to ensure a safe campus environment.

10% - Fire Safety Knowledge and Consultation

  • Oversees minor projects, system improvements, and repairs
  • Works to better understand fire safety problems and the needs of the department to develop recommendations for change.
  • Assists in identifying, analyzing, and resolving university fire safety issues.
  • Identifies risk factors associated with university fire safety guidelines and the need for risk mitigations to ensure consistency, efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness of the team.

10% - Administrative Duties

  • Prepare basic reports and communications to provide information.
  • Organizes and maintains appropriate documentation to ensure compliance with university policies.
  • Performs basic system repairs, device replacement, and testing.

5% - Other

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • 2 years of relevant experience.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • NICET Level I – ITM water-based fire protection systems.

Compensation

  • Salary range is $44,422 to $55,527. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Also, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
