The College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences (CEFNS) provides a collaborative and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff engaged in discovery across the biological, physical, mathematical, and environmental sciences. The Center for Materials Interfaces in Research and Applications (¡MIRA!) is an interdisciplinary research center within CEFNS dedicated to advancing materials science through inclusive excellence, innovation, and community engagement. ¡MIRA! integrates scientific discovery with culturally responsive education and outreach programs—such as ¡MIRA! Scholars, CARE, and SparCQS—to expand participation in STEM and strengthen connections between scientific research and the communities it serves.


About the Position

The ¡MIRA! Community Program Coordinator, Intermediate supports the administration, communication, and community engagement efforts for multiple student-facing programs within the ¡MIRA! Center for Materials Interfaces in Research and Access. This position coordinates activities for programs including CARE, ¡MIRA! Scholars, SparCQS, and the ¡MIRA! Colloquium Series, while maintaining the center’s digital presence and public visibility through website updates, news stories, and social media. The position plays a central role in recruiting, mentoring, and supporting students participating in ¡MIRA! programs; coordinating day-to-day logistics and communications; planning professional development and outreach events; and ensuring program compliance and reporting for federally funded initiatives. The Coordinator collaborates closely with ¡MIRA! leadership, staff, faculty, and external partners to advance the center’s mission of broadening access to STEM education and research.

Responsibilities Include

35% - Program Coordination & Student Support

  • Coordinates student-facing programs including ¡MIRA! Scholars, CARE, and SparCQS.
  • Supports recruitment and application processes, manages participant communications, and maintains records of program data to be used in evaluation.
  • Coordinates scheduling of program activities, professional development meetings, travel logistics, and research presentations.
  • Provides individualized student check-ins before, during, and after participation.
  • Supports program activities, including planning and giving presentations.
  • Coordinates the End-of-Year Celebration (EOYC) including hotel blocks, catering orders, student presentation sign-ups, RSVPs, and event materials.
  • Point of contact for program participants and other program stakeholders or constituents, including telephone and email communications; answers questions regarding the program.

30% - Community & Partnership Engagement

  • Supports outreach events for CARE, SparCQS, and other programs in surrounding reservation and rural communities.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff leads, and community partners to plan culturally responsive programming.
  • Represents ¡MIRA! at community events, classroom visits, and recruitment activities.
  • Builds relationships with schools, mentors, and STEM organizations to expand program impact and inclusivity.
  • Acts as a liaison for program to potential or current volunteers, members, participants, external stakeholders or constituents, and/or community partners.

20% - Event & Outreach Coordination

  • Plan, schedule, and implement program outreach events, professional development workshops for students and ¡MIRA!
  • Colloquium talks; collaborate with faculty and community partners; coordinate event logistics (space, catering, travel, promotion, and reimbursements); develop flyers and communication materials; represent ¡MIRA! at outreach and recruitment events.

10% - Marketing & Web Management

  • Coordinates ¡MIRA! program websites and student opportunities page; updates program information and deadlines; coordinates with IT for larger web changes and accessibility updates.
  • Develops and posts news content, photos, and success stories across ¡MIRA! channels.
  • Creates and schedules posts on LinkedIn to share colloquium announcements, student achievements, and program news.
  • Reposts relevant content from MIRA leadership and NAU communications.

5% - Other

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (STEM, Education, or Administration).
  • 2 years of relevant experience coordinating community or educational programs.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in STEM education or outreach coordination at a university or research center.
  • Experience working with students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple programs and deadlines.
  • Experience with event coordination, travel logistics, and budget tracking.
  • Familiarity with federal or foundation-funded program administration.

Compensation

Salary range is $48,000 to $55,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Also, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
