  • This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
  • Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. About the Department/College

Under the general direction of the Manager, Carpentry for Facility Services, this position works closely with Housing and the construction trades on classroom and office, renovation projects as well as repairing and maintaining the doors, windows, desks, bathroom partitions and the overall general maintenance of the buildings on NAU Campus and satellite facilities.


About the Position

This position is responsible for construction, maintaining, and repairing buildings and structures to ensure a safe and structurally secure campus environment. The Carpenter, Senior also monitors and maintains records of university building information and prepares maintenance reports with information related to university facilities to be used for recommendations as well as installs and repairs office components as necessary.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent customer-service skill, possess and demonstrate strong communication skills, a cooperative collaborative nature along with the desire and ability to motivate staff is an essential trait of this position.

This position exists to aid and assist Facility Services’ mission to the University by providing superior customer service to the Campus community, exercising fiscal responsibility, reporting on leading edge technology and practicing sustainable maintenance and operations.

Responsibilities Include

65% - Work Requests and Chargeable Projects

  • Responsible for actively leading the framing, casework, demo, drywall hanging, abatement, media installations for Carpentry, Roofing and Masonry projects.
  • Snow removal.
  • Keeping a clean and safe shop and work site.
  • Perform building maintenance.
  • Complete projects outside the traditional scope of Carpentry, Roofing and Mason trades.
  • Assist the Carpentry Manager with daily shop management.
  • Create estimates for Carpentry, Masonry and Roofing projects.

15%% - Coordinating and Communicating

  • Problem solve in the field on projects for Carpentry, Masonry and Roofing.
  • Communicate with other trades, PM's and customers regarding a project's status through in person meetings, and/or email.
  • Modify work orders through Work Control team.
  • Update project status to Carpentry Manager on a daily basis. Provide material lists.

10%% - Shop Equipment Maintenance and Repair

  • Safety training (hands on).
  • Keep required safety profile up to date.

5% - Technical Knowledge and Resources for Campus Community

  • Assist Carpentry Manager with Payroll Approvals, TMA daily time reviews and approvals, keep accurate personal daily time logs.

5% - Other

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma
  • 6+ years of relevant experience

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a higher learning institution, hospital or any other institution.
  • Lead experience in at least one: Carpentry, Roofing, Masonry.
  • Roofing experience.
  • Masonry experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Experience as a lead on a Carpentry, Roofing, and/or Mason crew.
  • Advanced knowledge of university carpentry processes and policies.
  • Knowledge of carpentry, roofing and Masonry work including installation, maintenance, and repair.

Compensation

  • Salary range is $55,085 - $63,856. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
