About the Department/College

The Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University continues a proud tradition of training the next generation of music teachers, performers, and scholars for the State of Arizona and the Southwest. Kitt School of Music is a vibrant community within Northern Arizona University serving approximately 250 music majors and hundreds of music minors and non-music majors. The School offers three undergraduate degrees in music (Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts) and the Master of Music (seven concentrations including Instrumental Performance). Studio faculty frequently model artistic excellence through performances in solo, chamber, and ensemble settings. About the Position

The Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Flute. The successful candidate will be an inspiring teacher, accomplished performer, and active scholar/artist who will contribute to the growth of the woodwind area and the broader mission of the School of Music. This position emphasizes applied flute instruction, chamber music coaching, courses in pedagogy and literature, and active participation in recruitment, performance, and service.

Responsibilities Include
  • Teach applied flute and related areas (piccolo, bass, and alto flute) woodwind/flute methods, chamber music, flute literature, flute pedagogy to undergraduate and graduate music majors and minors.
  • Teach in a secondary area of expertise, such as music literature, music theory, ear training, or introductory general studies in music (Western classical or popular genres).
  • Recruit outstanding students.
  • Perform with Kitt School of Music faculty in solo and chamber music settings.
  • Maintain a performing and research agenda at the national level.
  • Serve on faculty committees and contribute to departmental governance.
  • Mentor students in academic, professional, and career development.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate in performance (ABD considered if degree completed by start date).

  • Experience performing as a soloist and in orchestral and wind band settings.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in teaching performers and future educators at the university/collegiate level.
  • Extensive and varied experience as performer or recording artist in chamber, solo, and ensemble settings.
  • Performance experience in contemporary idioms representing 20th and 21st-century flute literature.
  • Evidence of potential for ongoing excellence in scholarly/creative contributions to the profession.
  • Experience teaching in a secondary area.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of current trends in pedagogy and performance of flute.

  • Pedagogical knowledge of contemporary flute techniques and literature of the 20th and 21st centuries.

  • Knowledge of chamber music literature and ensemble coaching techniques.

Skills:

  • Effective recruitment and student engagement strategies.

Abilities:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty in applied, ensemble, and academic areas in music.
  • Ability to mentor and advise students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels.

Compensation

Budgeted salary is $70,000.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
