About the Department/College

Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a Carnegie R1 university with over $77 million dollars in annual research expenditures. The School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems (SICCS) is known for its student-centered approach and strong emphasis on hands-on learning and research. Faculty and students engage in cutting-edge work in areas like AI, Robotics, and Microelectronics. We offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees, offered by approximately 60 faculty in the school, with roughly 1,200 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The undergraduate Electrical and Computer Engineering degree programs are ABET-accredited. The department fosters close faculty-student interaction, with a focus on mentoring and collaborative research, partnering with local and national organizations to apply engineering solutions to real-world problems, especially those relevant to Arizona and the Southwest.


About the Position

The Steve Sanghi College of Engineering (SCE) at Northern Arizona University (NAU) seeks candidates for a tenure track professor position in Embedded Electronics at the School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems (SICCS). The primary responsibilities for this position include research, scholarship, and service to the department, university, and professional community. As a faculty member, the successful candidate will be expected to strongly interact with the newly created Center for semiconductor packaging and metrology, funded by a $13-million grant.

The candidate should have expertise in the design, fabrication, and characterization of embedded systems, semiconductor devices, or semiconductor packaging. Special areas of interest include embedded AI/ML, 2.5D/3D IC, heterogeneous integration, packaging, MEMS, and electronic devices for in-memory computing. The successful candidate is expected to establish an innovative research program that builds upon existing strengths at NAU. This includes engaging collaboratively with faculty from SCE and other colleges within NAU. The new Center for semiconductor packaging and metrology features state-of-the-art experimental facilities to support this work and the successful candidate is anticipated to use and support this Center to grow their research effort.

This is a 9 (August - May) month tenure track position.  

Responsibilities Include
  • Teaching: Course delivery, Curriculum Development, Student Mentorship, Student Evaluation.
  • Research: Conduct original research in Computer Engineering, Scholarly Activity, Grant Writing.
  • Service: Serve in Departmental and Institutional Committees, Scientific Community Engagement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in Embedded Electronics, including design, fabrication, and characterization of embedded systems, semiconductor devices, or semiconductor packaging.
  • Specialized knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • Embedded AI/ML
    • 2.5/3D Integrated Circuits (IC)
    • Heterogeneous integration
    • Semiconductor packaging
    • Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS)
    • In-memory computing devices
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and sustain an innovative, externally funded research program.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across departments or institutions.
  • Interest in and ability to engage the semiconductor packaging and metrology facility, including use of its experimental facilities.
  • Strong record of scholarly publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals related to embedded electronics.
  • Experience with or interest in developing industry research partnerships and applied research in embedded electronics.

Preferred Teaching and Instructional Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in innovative and inclusive undergraduate and graduate teaching and curriculum development in computer engineering, particularly in areas related to embedded electronics or semiconductor technologies.
  • Interest and capacity for developing new courses aligned with emerging technologies in embedded systems, semiconductor engineering, and/or metrology.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
